Becoming Parents: How to strengthen your marriage as your family grows by Pamela Jordan, Scott Stanley and Howard Markman (Jossey-Bass, 1999)

With so much emphasis on childbirth preparation, we seem to neglect what I would call “relationship preparation.” This book is a wonderful resource for parents and parents-to-be. It provides good information about relationship dynamics as well as clear, concise explanations and guidelines for healthy communication and negotiation. It highlights problem areas specific to couples with a new baby such as time management, preservation of intimacy, and stress. The examples of conflict and resolution are real; readers will be able to easily identify with the couples in the book. The authors of this book are all developers of PREP, the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program. I highly recommend this book as a resource for new families.
