Composing Myself, A Journey Through Postpartum Depression
By Fiona Shaw (Steerforth Press, 1998)

This is a moving memoir of one woman's journey through postpartum depression. Fiona Shaw uses her writing to capture the pain, confusion, shame and recovery she experienced following the birth of her second child. Her descriptions of her inner turmoil and her self-perceptions during the depression are among the most visceral I have read. Her efforts to find meaning in this experience and to come to some understanding of the roots of her depression are heartfelt and persistent. This book takes the reader out of the diagnostic world of postpartum depression and immerses us in the world of a family shaken and touched by an unexpected and often misunderstood emotional and physiological response following childbirth.
