I met Leslie Kirk Campbell in 1996 when she was in Boston to promote her book and attend the ALACE conference. I heard her read from her book and was completely taken by her affect and her insights into the psychological and spiritual processes that are involved in the evolution toward motherhood. She has written a book that provides an engaging narrative to read, thoughts and writings from new and expectant mothers, and letters that Leslie, herself, wrote to her unborn baby during her pregnancy. Most importantly, she provides questions and ideas for the reader to consider in her own journey. These "food for thought" suggestions create an opportunity for the reader to keep her own journal through each trimester and beyond to postpartum. I have found this book extremely helpful for women who are having a difficult time connecting with their unborn babies and for women who are struggling with ambivalence, trepidation and concerns about being a good mother. All pregnant women can benefit from this book, regardless of whether they use it as a tool for keeping a journal or a good read. Professionals can benefit as well, as it helps expand our notion of the kinds of issues women struggle with and think about as they are growing into motherhood.
