Making Healthy Families by Gayle Peterson, MSSW, Ph.D. (Shadow and light Publications, 2000)
In birthing circles, Gayle Peterson is known for her book "An Easier Childbirth," a book that helps women and their partners prepare for childbirth through personal exploration, relaxation, body-centered hypnosis, and pain management work. As an experienced family therapist, Gayle knows that birth is the beginning of the journey into family. She now provides us with a wonderful, succinct, easy-to-digest book that addresses the fundamental elements necessary for healthy family functioning.
Drawing from a variety of theories on family functioning as well as current research, Gayle presents the various stages of family life, along with their inherent challenges and stresses. She offers ideas, guidance and interactive exercises so that readers can avail themselves of her wisdom in an experiential manner and can begin to initiate changes in their own families.
Given the overwhelming number of self-help books available and the difficulty in choosing the "right" one or in finding time to get through them all, I recommend Making Healthy Families as a wonderful first step in the joinery toward healthier family life for yourselves and for the families with whom you work.
